Roxanne Living with HIV and Thriving, with Support from Her Care Team
Posted on 25. Jan, 2012 by Kaiser Permanente in Compassion, Ease and Convenience, Excellent Care
Kaiser Permanente member Roxanne Hanna-Ware works in the human services field, advocating for HIV-positive people every day. However, she felt an alarming amount of guilt and shame when she received her own positive diagnosis in 1998.
“It was something I didn’t want to deal with,” she said. “And I just kept it a secret.”
But she found solace in her care team at the Kaiser Permanente women’s clinic (Dr. Sally Slome, nurse case manager Heidi Werbel, and social worker Jeannifer Key) at the Kaiser Permanente women’s clinic in Oakland, where she receives great care and the emotional support she needs. Today, Roxanne is healthy and is not letting her HIV status engulf her life.
“I can now live with HIV and know that it is one of my issues, but it is not my main issue,” she said.
